Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Wempe Ref. 5125J

It’s not often we have the opportunity to offer you a beautiful Patek Philippe Annual Calendar, especially one as exceptional as this. What we have here is the Ref. 5125 Wempe, specially designed to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the renowned German jewelry and watch house, Wempe. In 2003, Patek Philippe released the limited edition Ref. 5152, with only 475 pieces produced. Among these, 125 were crafted in yellow gold, and we have number 028 from this exclusive yellow gold series.

The design of this watch is truly stunning, and although it was released in 2003, it still exudes a timeless, vintage appeal. The beautiful silver dial features elegant Alpha hands and baton markers, which further enhance its classic charm. The 37mm case size is perfectly balanced—not too small, yet substantial enough to feel substantial on the wrist.

We can find the Wempe signature on the moonphase dial, a subtle but distinctive touch. The dial also includes a moonphase window, as well as a day and month window, with the date displayed in an aperture at six o’clock, adding both functionality and style. Additionally, the watch comes with some special Wempe features, including a secondary closed case back engraved with the Wempe logo, allowing you to switch the case back if you prefer a different look.

This watch is in pristine condition and has recently undergone a full service at Patek Philippe’s authorized service center in the Netherlands. It comes as a complete set, with service papers, making it a highly collectible and remarkable watch.

Backstory

Patek Philippe has devoted itself to the manufacture of complicated watch movements from the get go. In 1889, the Swiss powerhouse was the first to patent a perpetual calendar pocket watch mechanism. Then in 1902, a patent was filed for the first double chronograph. In 1923, they introduced the first split-second chronograph wristwatch. The first perpetual calendar wristwatch would follow in 1925.

And if you are this good at something, it only makes sense you try and push it to the max. In 1989, Patek showcased its Caliber 89. A whopping 33 complications crammed into a 1.1kg movement with 24 hands. Sensibly, they opted for the pocket watch form-factor, as this beast would not fit on even the biggest of wrists. It would be twenty-seven years before Vacheron Constantin took over the record of the most complicated watch movement.

Patek Philippe is famous for its world time calibers as well as its perpetual calendar chronographs. An example of their first iteration of the latter, the Ref. 1518 from 1941, was sold at auction in 2017 for an eye-watering $11.14 million.

Complicated Pateks are grail watches for many fanatical aficionados. Whether in vintage or modern guise, these are some of the finest examples of watchmaking you will find. A combination of mechanical magic, finishing artistry and timeless design mesmerize even the most seasoned of collectors.
